Herons

can i post yet?

Reminder to Me

When I grumble and complain it creates a negative foothold.
So I got to wondering what that looks like? Which one do you think most resembles evil having a foot in the door? This one cracked me up! WIth the leg and foot damaging heels of today ....

Traditional, yes.

Likely to me applied to me when I grumble and complain though I likely would not see or feel it as such.
Psalm 141:3-4b Set a guard over my mouth, Lord;
keep watch over the door of my lips. Do not let my heart be drawn to what is evil
so that I take part in wicked deeds....
Hmm, I do not think contemporary America even believes the word wicked could possibly apply to our deeds in 2013. Forgive me, Lord, and cleanse me I pray.

My Favorite Large Bird

Found this selection in Joy & Strength compiled by Mary Wilder Tileston. The Great Blue Heron is my favorite bird and frequently, almost daily flies over our house. If I don't see it at the house, then I spot it crossing over the Eastgate area or its way to the Little Miami RIver.
"It was a beautiful sight to see the herons come home, rising into the golden sunlight above the hills I could not tell from whence, and sailing on the glorious arches of their wings, on and on - always alone, and each as he came down with outstretched neck and pendent leges ready to settle, taking one last sweep  down, then up, on to the summit of the tall Scotch fir, to take a survey of the realm, and as another approached, plunging into the thick heads of lower trees with a loud good-night to his neighbors, and to all the fair land and water round about him, and a Deo Gratis for all his day's happiness, pleasant unto the ear of his dear God, if not consciously addressed to Him.
MY HEAVENLY FATHER CARETH FOR THEM, I AM OF MORE VALUE THAN MANY HERONS.

Little Liver Pills

Mom had bunches of sayings such as this one based on  a very popular and heavily advertised patent medicine.  "He has more money than Carter has Little Liver Pills" and other variants are used throughout my childhood and right into my adulthood.

Of course, you must remember this is the same Mom who called the refrigerator the ice box.

Wind Tower

Dan Baum reports in the June 2013 issue of "Popular Science" that Masdar City has created a new take on an old idea. They have built a wind tower, 20 feet across and five stories high. It keeps the people on the desert floor of this city cool in the central courtyard. In fact, he says it was "keeping us cool with a stiff breeze." He describes it as a "hollow tower on steel legs. The tower acts as a wind catcher, drawing cool breezes from above the city and directing them down to the courtyard. The street-level breezes it generates are constant and virtually free. It's not a modern invention .... but Engineers at Masdar improved upon the tradition by mounting computer-operated louvers at the top of the structure to maximize its efficiency; the panels open and close according to prevailing winds. They also added misting units to cool the air even further."

One of these might look good in Cincinnati, once you know what it is for!

Self protection

Pema

“When we protect ourselves so we won't feel pain, that protection becomes like armor, like armor that imprisons the softness of of the heart.”

― Pema Chödrön, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times

Well, I have been around the block several times trying to get the Blogsy app to post on Blogger. Seems the trouble might have been in the cache?

I am almost to the point I DO NOT CARE what the problem is or how to fix it.. But instead I am plodding on. Tomorrow I will take the computer tower to the repair guy to see if there is any lingering malware. Google help desk wanted to sell me $300 of protection for 3 years. I am not convinced they were totally informed on what my needs are.

So the armor I need for computers is radically different from what I need for my heart. Duh!

Masdar City of Light

Popular Science gave a large area of reporting to Masdar City, an $18-billion experiment under construction to build an eco-friendly city which will hold 40,000 residents in only two square miles of barren desert.

The reporter took a wrong turn on the way back to his hotel in Abu Dhabi and "ended up at the Al Wthba camel-race track, en eight-kilometer oval etched on the hard, brown floor of the desert. As the camels lined up for the day's third race, I noticed that they had on their backs not human riders but a metal contraption with a three-foot stick poking out the back." A nearby cameraman covering the race for Egyptian television explained," Camel owners had pressed generations of children into service as jockey, but after enough of them fell off and were trampled to death, the federation that regulates the sport ordered them replaced with robots."

WHAT???
"The camels were lean and long-legged - genetically engineered for speed and endurance. As they took off with their weird slow-motion gait, a phalanx of SUV's roared after them on a track, weaving for position and blaring their horns in a jumbled, parallel race. Each vehicle contained a trainer, shouting at his camel through a loudspeaker attached to the beast's robot and stabbing at a button to remotely rap the beast with the three-foot stick.
Could not understand the reporter, but the video showed it all!

Grandkids Magazine Sales

Every year the elementary school sells magazines for fund raising. Bob and I try to support their efforts. This year I studied the offering closely and decided I had not read a Popular Science magazine in years. So that is what Bob bought me. Wow! The June issue has a special section entitled "The Future of Energy."

Who ever thought a town named Pflugerville would take an energy headline? Sounds like a movie name!

The New York City firm Pvilion "produces power-generating fabric for large- scale commercial applications. Its flexible panels can be as efficient as rigid ones but far easier to manipulate into structures like canopies for electric-vehicle-charging stations." Look out George Jetson!! In fact, they liked the one station installed in 2011 so much they got a government grant to install 8 more!! This article is from the Pflugerville, Texas offical Website "Keyto the City"

Eight car charging stations to be installed in Pflugerville

Taking advantage of a Federal Grant provided by the Department of Energy, the city will install an additional eight car charging stations in Pflugerville with four in conjunction with the Pflugerville Community Library expansion and four at Stone Hill Town Center in front of the movie theater.

With two car charging stations already installed at the Pflugerville Community Development Corporation’s 130 Commerce Center development, these additional eight charging stations will be placed in high traffic areas.

"A number of proposed locations were considered and brought to Council for consideration," Assistant City Manager Trey Fletcher said. "The goal was to find a multi-purpose use. If people go to movie and choose to get some power at the same time, they may choose Pflugerville's theater with these new stations, and may choose to charge while finding a book at the Library."

If you want more information, (or just like dimples), watch this interview with Colin Touhey, CEO of Pvilion.

Favorite Things for Baby Boomers

"Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new Dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in string,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Cadillacs, cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
these are a few of my favorite things.

When the pipes leak,
When the bones creak,
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I don't feel so bad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Back pains, confused brain, and no fear of sinnin',
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin',
and we won't mention our short shrunken frames,
when we remember our favorite things.

When the joints ache,
When the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim,
then I remember the great life I've had,

and then I don't
feel so bad."

Every Attempt on July 4

Every attempt was made to distract and aggravate me today. Last night my Gmail account was hacked. So by the time I got up this morning there was a mounting pile of responses from my friends asking "Did you send me this? It's empty!" Not only that, my contacts were emptied too. Actually that might be okay. I have paper copies of most addresses and I can just re-enter the current ones.

But this was going to be my holiday to clear my desk and get down to writing. It never happened. I had phone calls from folks who wanted to tell me what is wrong with other Christians. I had phone calls regarding "Did you send me this?" I found the potatoes that needed eating in the fridge and the rhubarb that needed cooking, too.

Yet all the while, I kept reaching for The Lord and that pleases Him. I did not get frantic, even when I accidentally deleted the information from the funeral home about our arrangements for cremation. Oh, and the Mercy Health e-mail about my Health Assessment vanished, too.

So I end this day knowing Christ loves me. The dog is frantic over the explosions of fireworks. The potatoes were a hit. The rhubarb bars were tasty. The hubby is snoozing soundly.

Our Independence is secure this night and tomorrow is a new day!

extra entries when leaving comment

I VALUE your comments.
Please take the step to make the extra entries blogger asks for when you leave me a comment. I know it is a hassle. I just did it myself when leaving a comment from another Gmail address.
I know of no other way to filter out spam and hacking.
So please, do leave a comment. And bear with me as I wade through the hacking spam mess.

What a Bummer

My gmail account was hacked last evening and almost all of my contacts are gone! Good thing I have a paper copy. Have not decided yet if I want to change all e-mail addresses, maybe just use another site?

So I am taking a break from gmail for a while. I have other ways to occupy my time. If you really need to get in touch with me you have our phone number!

So, no I did not invite anyone to view Google documents. In fact, I just deleted all of my Google documents.

I am sorry if your account was effected. Really, it was all electronic warfare without my knowledge.

Where is Your Heart Turned?

Another great selection from William Law.

"The spirit of prayer is a pressing forth of the soul out of this earthly life,
it is a stretching with all its desire after the life of God,
it is a leaving, as far as it can, all its own spirit,
to receive a spirit from above, to be one life, one love, one spirit with Christ in God.
For the love which God bears to the soul, His eternal, never-ceasing desire to enter into it,
and to dwell in it, stays no longer than till the door of the heart opens for Him.
For nothing does, or can keep God out of the soul, or hinder His holy union with it,
but the desire of the heart turned from Him."

So, where is your heart turned? Toward Him or from Him?

Perfect Tomato Storm

I wrote this before the deaths of the Arizone Firemen. May the Lord comfort their families and may they rest in peace.

We have a little compost holder that we feed all year with kitchen scraps. Bob digs is out in late winter/early spring and spreads it on the raised bed garden.
This year the heat was fierce and early, basically making the snowpea crop a bust. But the tomatoes are growing like crazy!
We have had temperatures from 60-90 day and night, lots of little rain showers alternating with sun. Add the compost rich garden soil and look at these plants! There are only 4 and I have tied them up twice already.

Now we just hope they all ripen! The pepper plant is getting buried. First batch of basil is on the left. Go, God!!

Speaking of Petunias ...

Saw this report just now in Popular Science. Enjoy!

Various flowers (Left: Geranium magnificum; Middle: Gerbera hybrida; Right: Clematis armandii) showing a composite of immediately before and after application of charged powder paint. The pattern of powder deposition reveals the shape of the electric field. Image by Dominic Clarke and Daniel Robert
"Bumblebees distinguish flowers based on their colors, patterns, scents, and - as scientists recently discovered -electric fields. Researchers from the University of Bristol created charged and neutral artificial flowers, and based on thousands of flight landings, found that bees could tell differently charged charged flowers apart. While bees are usually positively charged, flowers are negatively charged; the difference in electric potential helps pollen stick to bees. And because a flower's electric field changes shape after an insect lands on it, bees may use that information to preferentially visit flowers where bugs haven't yet nabbed the nectar."

Pat Retired Last Friday

She had a horrible shock Sunday morning. Her husband got up about 1:30 AM had a massive heart attack, fell down the stairs and was probably dead before he hit the bottom. The paramedics were there instantly. Her cousin said they worked on him for an hour, but could not resuscitate him.
What fear that strikes in our hearts! It could happen to any of us! Pray for Pat, please. Visitation and funeral are this Friday evening.
George, may you rest in peace. Pat may you live continuing to trust your Lord and find His peace in the midst of this tragic ending of your earthly romance.

"The Sound of Chickens"

I saw a Chick-Fil-A car today. The window graphics made it look like a cow was looking out the window at me. Their theme is cows declaring "Eat more chikin!"

NPR had a bit yesterday about "free range eggs."
The caption for this photo read: "Cage-free chickens in Harold Sensenig's barn near Hershey, PA., get to roam and perch on steel rods, but they don't go outside." Inside one of those houses, 18,000 chickens are milling around on the floor. Some are perched on metal bars. A few are madly pecking away at the plastic covers on my shoes.Sensenig has a deal with a local egg buyer, Sauder's Eggs, which is paying twice the going rate for cage-free eggs. Sauder Eggs, in turn, supplies those eggs to Unilever and Aramark.
"It's more expensive to produce eggs this way, Sauder says. You need more buildings for the same number of chickens, because you can't stack the birds on several levels in the same house. There's also more work involved — somebody has to walk through the chicken house collecting stray eggs that chickens laid on the ground, rather than in their enclosed nests.
"But the industry, he says, is responding to "the perception that cage-free is a better product than eggs from a conventional cage house."
"Do you believe that?" I ask.
"Sauder pauses. "From a nutrition standpoint, the egg is the same," he says."

Bob loves Prairie Home Companion Jokes. Here is a great song he played for me recently.

Some of the Most Exquisite Work

Signs, signs, as the museum owner said, history of America in signs.
Gold leaf, etched glass, fancy fancy stuff!

They rent their hall for parties to pay their electric bills. P & G was having a get together there the evening that we visited.

Fun Outing with the Hunts!

Today we went to the American Sign Museum in downtown Cincinnati.
We saw everything from these HANDCARVED! wooden letters, to the first electric signs, neon, Hand lettering tools, gold leaf. It was great fun! Hope to take the Grandgirls one day.

Think I'll hook those girls with one of the You Tube videos.

Why I like CNC

When I wrote recently about the turtles I could not find a suitable photo on line. I solved that by joining the Cincinnati Nature Center again so I can get my own photos! Here are a few reasons I like the CNC. Enjoy!
The honeysuckle was fairly wilted in the heat. Does so remind me of our visit with Betty and Dan!

Who ate the ripe black one?

More to come another day!
